March-May 2010 Class Schedule

Earth Day is April 22 and during the entire month of April we will be celebrating. Join us for fun as we “Go Green!” Each Monday we will host a “Going Green” class that highlights various recycled, organic and “green” yarns.Classes include: Organic washcloths, bath scrubbies, water bottle cozies, knitted & felted dog bones, and knitted & crocheted market bags. We will also have a few special classes as listed below. Please call us to reserve a spot!

Our new techniques classes are going well. 2010 is The Year of the Tiger, and many of you have requested short classes to learn specific knitting techniques. Throughout the year, we will offer 20 technique classes for $10 each. Each class will be one hour and the focus will be on a specific area of knitting. Classes on the agenda are as follows: seaming, charting, buttonholes, short-rows, blocking, crocheted edgings, granny squares, cast-on types and their uses, continental knitting, knitting on DPNs, circular knitting, cables, 2-color knitting, charts, gauge & more. If you have an idea for a class, please let us know! We’ll be happy to add it to the list or schedule a one-on-one class just for you!

Listed below are new classes coming March-May, 2010. Please reserve your spot as soon as possible so that you don’t miss all the fun!

Chickens – March 11, 5-7 p.m. – Choose from our two chicken patterns and we’ll help you get started! Learn increases, decreases, short rows and more. Cost: $20, plus supplies.

Knitted Balloon Animals - March 15, 5-7 p.m. - We have a variety of patterns available. Choose the animal you like most and we’ll get you started! Learn increases, decreases, multi-color knitting and more. Cost: $20, plus supplies.

2010 Buttonholes – March 16, 5-6 p.m. – Part of our 20 Classes for $10 each series. Learn to work buttonholes in your patterns. Cost: $10, plus supplies.

Hobby Horse – March 18, 5-7 p.m. – You’ve seen him in the store; now we’ll teach you to make your very own! This is a wonderful heirloom gift idea.  Cost: $20, plus supplies.

Noro Vest – March 20, 9-11 a.m. – Using Noro (or any other yarn of your choice), we’ll help you get started on a cute spring top perfect for dressing up your wardrobe. Cost: $20, plus supplies.

12 Months of Christmas Santa Hat – March 24, 5-7 p.m. – Join us to knit for the holidays as we learn decreases, increases, bobbles and more.  This Santa hat will put a smile on everyone’s face! Cost: $20, plus supplies.

Spring Cleaning – March 27, 9-11 a.m. – Do you have a project that has you stumped?  One that you’ve pushed aside or put in a closet?  Bring it in and we’ll help you with it.  Clean up your unfinished projects so you can start something new! Cost: $20, plus supplies.

2010 Seaming – March 30, 5-6 p.m. – Part of our 20 Classes for $10 each series. Learn various seaming techniques to aid in finishing your projects. Cost: $10, plus supplies.

Knitted Market Bags - April 3, 9-11 a.m. - Join us as we knit market bags to use at ALL the shops! Cost: $20, plus supplies.

Organic Washcloths - April 5, 5-7 p.m. - Use recycled, organic and all natural yarns to knit your own washcloths.  Cost: $20, plus supplies.

2010 Blocking – April 6, 5-6 p.m. – Part of our 20 Classes for $10 each series. Learn to block your projects for the perfect fit every time! Cost: $10, plus supplies.

Organic Dog Bones - April 8, 5-7 p.m. - Learn to knit and felt dog bones to satisfy your finicky canines! Cost: $20, plus supplies.

Organic Scrubbies - April 12, 5-7 p.m. - Use recycled, organic and all natural yarns to knit your own washcloths! Cost: $20, plus supplies.

Crocheted Market Bags - April 14, 5-7 p.m. - Join us as we crochet market bags to save our environment. Cost: $20, plus supplies.

Knitted Bottle Cozies - April 19, 9-11 a.m. - Just in time for warm weather, join us as we use recycled and organic yarns to knit water bottle cozies to keep our drinks nice and cool during the hot summer months ahead! Cost: $20, plus supplies.

Knitted Market Bags - April 20, 5-7 p.m. - Join us as we knit market bags to save our environment. Cost: $20, plus supplies.

Grass Circular Shrug – April 22, 5-7 p.m. Join us to knit a beautiful circular shrug perfect for spring days! Using yarn made from hemp, this grass project is really fun! Cost: $20, plus supplies.

Recycled Project – April 24, 9-11 a.m. – Don’t throw that yarn away! Bring in any old project that you’ve given up on and let us help you find a new use for the yarn. We can help you “re-purpose” this yarn for a “new” project! Cost: $20, plus supplies.

2010 Sock Summit! May 1, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. In this class we will teach you to knit basic socks. You will cast on, knit a complete toddler sock, and bind off during the class. From beginning to end, you will understand the concept of sock knitting. For this class you must know how to knit on DPNs or two-circular needles. This class is limited to 6 students.

Classes at Creative Yarns

We offer a full range of knit and crochet classes and open knitting sessions designed to fit your needs! If you’re stuck on a project or looking for new ideas, stop in and see us. Class projects are available on demand and we welcome your ideas and suggestions. Classes are available days, evenings, and weekends (see schedule), and are updated quarterly. To register for a class, please call us at 478-7GO-KNIT (746-5648). All of our classes can be adapted for groups or individual/private lessons. Refunds of your class fee will be made with a 48-hour notification of inability to attend class. Since class sizes are limited, please reserve your spot so that we may ensure you receive the personal attention you deserve. Payment for classes must be made at registration. Teachers will work with students on missed class time at their convenience.

Class Policies

Once your class fee is received, your space in class is guaranteed.

Your class supplies must be purchased at Creative Yarns prior to the class. If you are reserving a class over the phone, we can take your credit card info to hold your spot.

Class sessions run for the designated times—please be on time.

Space in classes is limited to registered students.

Beginner Private Lessons

KNITTING 101 - 1 (2 hour) class - The perfect class for the absolute beginner - no experience needed. Learn the necessary basics: cast-on, knit, purl, cast-on and bind-off as you make a scarf or washcloth. Cost: $25 plus supplies.

BEGINNER CROCHET - 1 (2 hour) class - The perfect class for the absolute beginner - no experience needed. Learn the necessary basics to crochet as you make a belt, scarf or small blanket. Cost: $25, plus supplies.


Advanced / Intermediate Lessons

(Add $5 for private lessons.)

2010 SOCK SUMMIT! - 1 (ALL DAY - 6-hour) class - In this class we will teach you basic socks and how to knit them. You will cast on, knit a complete toddler sock, and bind off during the class. From beginning to end, you will understand the concept of sock knitting. For this class you must know how to knit on DPNs or two-circular needles. Cost: $30, plus supplies.

BEGINNER INTARSIA - 1 (2-hour) class. For Intermediate Knitters - The perfect class to learn how to use bobbles to work a design into a project. Suggested project – felted coasters. Cost: $20, plus supplies.

BEGINNING WHEEL SPINNING 2 (2 hour) session - Two sessions. Level: Beginner Course Description: This workshop begins with learning to spin wool roving into yarn. You will learn the skills of drafting, producing a balanced yarn, and plying techniques. Students will choose wool roving at the shop either before or at class time. Instructor: Cost is $75, and includes a $25 fiber credit for use in the shop. Weekly wheel rental is available; ask us for details!

BRING YOUR OWN PROJECT - 2 hours (4 sessions/Thursdays). This class fills up fast! This class allows you to choose a project that will stretch your skills and have instruction every step of the way. Cost: $60, plus supplies.

BUTTONHOLES - 1 (1 hour) class - Learn bu ttonhole techniques and how to place them. Cost: $10, plus supplies.

CHART READING - 1 (1 hour) class - Learn all about chart reading and how it can simplify your knitting. Cost: $10, plus supplies.

CONTINENTAL KNITTING - 1 (2 hour) class – Many ‘lefties’ or crocheters have an easier time learning “Continental Style Knitting”. It’s an efficient method for everyone. Learn to stop ‘throwing’ your yarn with the right hand and simply ‘pick’ the yarn through.

CROCHETING BEYOND THE BASICS – 1 (2-hour) class. - If you understand basic crocheting stitches, and you are ready to move forward, this is the class for you! Learn techniques for color changes, various stitches, how to read patterns, and so much more! Cost: $20, plus supplies.

ENTRELAC BAG 2 (2 hour) classes. Learn the basics of Entrelac—French for interlaced. Stockinette stitch combined with specific methods for picking up stitches and knitting stitches together, will make a beautiful, woven bag. Kit and Needles required. Cost: $40, plus supplies.

FAIR ISLE WORKSHOP – 1 (2-hour) class - For Intermediate Knitters - Fair Isle Workshop with Introduction to 2-color knitting, carrying and stranding. Use both hands and get beautiful results. Cost: $20, plus supplies. Suggested project: hat; supplies needed are worsted weight yarn (2 colors) and appropriate sized needles.

FELTED CLOGS – 1 (2-hour) classes - Make some Comfy and CUTE Clogs for winter mornings. For this class, you must know the basics of knitting and purling. Cost: $35, plus supplies.

FELTED LITTLE ANIMALS 1 (2-hour) class. You’ve seen them on display in our store, now come see how to make them! In this class we will cover the basics of needle felting small animals and you will create one of your very own! Cost $45, plus supplies. Supplies needed include a needle felting kit & roving in your choice of colors.

FINISHING – 1 (2 hour) class - Learn the proper way to block, seam and finish neck edges of your KNITTED projects. Bring 4 squares, knitted in stockinette stitch, each 6 inches by 6 inches. Keep 2 squares on the needles and bind off the other 2. Any yarn and needle size is fine. Cost: $20, plus supplies.

FUNCTIONAL KNITERACY 1 (2 hour) class. Designed for knitters who want to learn more about reading patterns and working up decorative stitches - You will go home with samples to help you remember which stitches you like the best and to inspire you to use them in your own knitting projects. Bring #8 or #9 needles and yarn to match. Cost: $20, plus supplies.

GARDEN PARY HATS - 2 (2-hour) classes. Lace is not just for shawls! Susan teaches you how to knit a simple lace chart to create a stunning garden hat. Cost: $40, plus supplies.

GET YOUR GAUGE ON! - 1 (1 hour) class. - Learn all about gauge and why it matters. You will learn to count stitches and correct your gauge. Cost: $10, plus supplies.

HEATHER HOODIE VEST - 3 (2 hour) classes. - In this class you must know the basic knit & purl stitches and how to cast on/bind off. We will cover the pattern instructions, select yarn and begin knitting. You will be knitting at home between classes in order to complete the project within this time slot. Cost: $20 for all three classes, plus supplies.

HELP! WHAT NOW? – 1 (1-hour) class. - This is for the knitter who knows how to knit but doesn’t know how to “un-knit,” i.e., fix those mistakes that happen to us all. We will have hands on practice until you will feel comfortable fixing your own knitting errors. Please bring a 6-inch X 6 inch ‘swatch’ of any yarn—still on the needles! Cost: $20.

HELP! WITH HAZEL 1 (2 hour) knit session - Bring your questions for advice and directions Tuesdays from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. FREE!

INTRODUCTION to NEEDLE FELTING 1 (3-hour) class. Needle felting is all the rage these days and you don’t have to have an embellisher machine to do it! Just a few inexpensive tools and you’ll be on your way. In this class we will cover the basics of needle felting and create several two-dimensional projects which might include a set of coasters, a small book or journal cover or a small piece of art for the wall. Cost $45, includes pkg. of four felting needles, needle-felting foam, roving for one project. Other felting supplies are available for purchase.

KNITTING BEYOND the BASICS – 1 (2-hour) class. - You are knitting and purling and eager to learn more! What’s the next step? This class can be anything you need it to be. Each session focuses on a different aspect of knitting fun. Examples of class topics include – but are not limited to – color changes, cables, knitting in the round, reading a pattern and so much more! The perfect class to take when starting a new project! Upon completion of these sessions you can consider yourself a true knitter! Cost: $20 per session.

KNITTING ON CIRCULAR NEEDLES - 1 (1 hour) class - Learn all about knitting on circular needles and how to join your knitting to knit in the round. Cost: $10, plus supplies.

KNITTING ON DPNs - 1 (1 hour) class - Learn all about double point needles and how they are useful in your projects. Cost: $10, plus supplies.

KATHY’S CARDIGAN 4 (2 hour) classes. Improve your knitting skills in this fun-filled class that emphasizes pattern reading, confidence building and problem solving. You’ll learn tips and tricks in every class that will reinforce your joy of knitting. Work on Kathy’s Cardigan This class is designed for Intermediate/Advanced skill level knitters. Cost: $60, plus supplies.

MAGICAL MOEBIUS SCARF – 1 (2 hour) class. - This is for the knitter who wants to make a scarf with a “twist.” This unique method of casting on, using extra long circular needles, makes a fluid, circular scarf, particularly suited for warmer weather. The book by Cat Bordhi (A Treasury of Magical Knitting) is helpful but not necessary. Cost: $20, plus supplies, which include long (47” +) circular needles and yarn of your choice.

ORPHAN CLASS - 1 (1-hour) class. Do you have a project that you have put aside because you ran into something you didn’t know how to do? Or didn’t like the way it was turning out and wanted to make some changes to the pattern but didn’t know how? Bring all your orphans and those projects you’ve put down because you ran into trouble. This is your chance to get specialized help for your project. Cost: $10.

SEAMING - 1 (1 hour) class - A part of our “20 classes for $10 in 2010.” Learn all about seams and the different seaming techniques. Cost: $10, plus supplies.

SOCKS ON 2 CIRCULAR NEEDLES – 2 (2 hour) classes. Socks on 2 circulars don’t slip off! Cost: $40, plus supplies.

SOCKS ON DOUBLE POINTED NEEDLES - 2 (2 hour) classes. Learn the basics of sock construction using the ‘old fashioned’ dp needles. Cost: $40, plus supplies.

SUPER BULKY WINTER VEST - 1 (2 hour) class - In this class you must know the basic knit & purl stitches and how to cast on/bind off. We will cover the pattern instructions, select yarn and begin knitting. You will complete the project on your own. Cost: $20, plus supplies.

SUSAN’S SUMMER SHAWL - 2 (2-hour) classes. This is one of our most sought out projects! Susan teaches you how to read a simple lace chart to knit a beautiful breezy summer shawl. Cost: $40, plus supplies.

The Thing-A-Ma-Jig 4 (2-hour) classes. In these classes we will cover all of the techniques necessary to knit a sweater. You will learn cast on/bind off techniques, short rows, guage, ribbing, pockets, buttonholes, belts, edging techniques, how to change colors, and so much more! Cost: $75, supplies included.

The What-Cha-Ma-Call-It! 4 (2-hour) classes. In the Thing-A-Ma-Jig class you learned all of the techniques necessary to knit a sweater. This class carries that information a bit further and we teach you to techniques like Intarsia, Bobbles, Cables and more! Cost: $75, supplies included.

TEENS and PRE-TEENS BEGINNING KNITTING – 1 (2-hour) class. - Designed for students (ages 10 and up) who want to learn to knit. Take as many or as few classes as you would like and pay as you go. Advance notice for classes is required. Ask about other events if you have a group. We know that summer schedules are tough and we want to be accommodating! Cost: $15, plus supplies.

WORKSHOP - Knitted Flower Embellishment 3 hours (1 session/Sunday). Add that special finishing touch to a purse or hat or just make a pin by adding a 3-D knitted (felted or not) flower and leaves to your projects. Supplies: variety of knitting needles and yarn (wool if you want to felt the flowers), ribbon, novelty, any kind of yarn you want to use, buttons, tapestry needle. Cost: $35, plus supplies.

Wrap Me UP! Shrug Knit-A-Long - 4 (2 hour) classes - In this class you must know the basic knit & purl stitches and how to cast on/bind off. We will cover the pattern instructions, select yarn and begin knitting. You will be knitting at home between classes in order to complete the project within this time slot. Cost: $10 per session, plus supplies. Come as you need to, and knit on your own between classes.
